The context

Rock Health is powering the future of healthcare by funding and supporting startups that are building the next generation of technologies transforming healthcare. It provides entrepreneurs with funding, strategic and operational support, co-working space, and access to a top-tier network of partners, academic medical centers, and clinicians.

As Rock Health grew, their previous website struggled to follow and communicate effectively all that Rock Health is about. It also needed a new alignment with the visual and communication style of the fast changing technology and innovation industries.

We were invited by TOI, our California-based partners to take part in the production of Rock Health’s new website. While our task was to design its front end, TOI worked with Rock Health to reassess their marketing strategy, brand identity, organize the content structure, produce and develop the website.

The concept

The brief was to design a custom website which would be powered by the WordPress platform, to reference healthcare, new technologies, and related aesthetics while using the familiar ways of navigating and presenting the content.

Our concept was to create a linear, easy to follow story, that is approachable both content-wise and visually, feels fast, modern, and techy, while clearly communicating Rock Health’s different activities. It would also be responsive design ready and well matched to the underlying technical platform.

The work

The new homepage is an overview of all that Rock Health is about, presented through a parallax sequence of full width sections, each one communicating a single message.

Each of the three main aspects of Rock Health’s work (Startups, Events, Resources) is color-coded, so that it’s always easy to differentiate between the corresponding content. The visual style is defined through a combination of big, warm images, dynamic colors, modern but approachable typography, clear and short copy, and modern, sharp iconography.

Each of the sections has its own homepage laid out in a similar manner, while the bottom level content is presented in a distraction-free, single column layout. This ensures good legibility and a clear hierarchy of content throughout the website.

The full width photos are warm and direct rather than conceptual, which helps communicate Rock Health’s direct, practical and motivational approach. The custom icons are clean, sharp, and flat, matching the style of new generation tech products. The content sections are subtly interconnected with a stylized “+” element from the logo, referencing Rock Health’s nurturing ecosystem.

The results

The new website completely overhauled Rock Health’s online presence, upgrading its content architecture, communication and visual style to effectively match its range of activities as well as the field they are working in. It established a new visual code which could become a basis for the wider communication platform.
